All-Stars play in district tournament

PIKEVILLE — The Martin County All-Stars played in the District 3 Cal Ripken tournament at Bob Amos Park this past week. The 8U, 10U and 12U divisions participated against Johnson, Magoffin, Lawrence and Pike counties.

Below is a recap of tournament action.

Martin County 12U All-Stars fell to Pike County in the first round of the double-elimination tournament. Martin County was placed in a second bracket and took down Johnson County 13-11.

Johnson County jumped on top quick in this one. The Eagles were up 7-0 after the first inning.

Hunter Dials hit a single to advance to first base and Zaden Coots banged a double to score Dials for Martin County’s first run.

Johnson County’s catcher dropped the third strike to give Chase Hinkle a chance to get to first. He turned on the jets and Coots saw his opportunity to slide into home for run No. 2.

Peyton McPeek was at the plate when another third strike dropped. Gaven Grace and Hinkle caught the catcher snoozing and both slid into home for a score of 7-4.

Kruze Howell took the mound and sent the batters back in 1, 2, 3.

In the bottom of the third, Howell was hit by a pitch to advance to first. Bentlee Stacy and Tyler Stacy each knocked a single to center. T. Stacy’s brought in two runners. Coots kept the bats going and hit a double bagger to bring T. Stacy home. After two wild pitches, Coots and Luke Preece would take the lead for Martin County 9-7.

In the bottom of the fourth, with Hale on first, Howell sent a deep ball to center for a single. Hale stole third and home on a wild pitch. T. Stacy cranked one to the outfield that bounced over the fence for an automatic double and two runners scored. Coots hit another double to the right-field fence to score a runner and extend the lead to 13-8.

Johnson County reeled off three more runs in the fifth. A throw to first made it there in time for the out, but Coots came off the base too early. Realizing his mistake, he threw to B. Stacy at third for the tag and final out of the game.

Coots was 3-3 with all doubles. Howell, T.Stacy, Dylan Hale and B. Stacy were 2-3. Grace, Hinkle, Preece and Dials each had a hit.

The 12U All-Stars played Magoffin County on Sunday but were defeated 11-1.
