INEZ — The Martin County High School girls basketball team hosted five teams June 13 for a slew of games. Paintsville, Greenup County, Knott County, Lawrence County and Perry Central played in the Rising Stars Summer Games.
Martin County played in four of the nine games on the day. The first Lady Cards matchup was against Greenup County, which the Musketeers won on a buzzer-beater by two.
Martin County point guard Laken Williams hit two treys and went for 16 points. Three-point prowess Jaaliyah Warren hit three from downtown and two buckets for 13. Alyssa Allen had eight points for the game, Katie Marcum had seven and Kennadi Mollett hit a free throw.
Martin County’s next contest was against 14th Region powerhouse Perry Central. Williams hit a three-ball as time was winding down to send the two teams to overtime. K. Marcum and Williams each hit a clutch shot from behind the charity stripe to defeat the Commodores 56-54.
K. Marcum was a beast in the paint and led all scorers with 15. Williams hit a trey and went for 12. Warren nailed three from behind the arc and a bucket to put 11 on the scoreboard. Allen was 4-5 from the free-throw line and had 10 points for the game. Rounding out the scoring, Brooke Marcum picked up four points, Mollett added three and Chloe May scored one.
