HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Lady Cards have been hard at work since the school year ended, playing around 35 games in three weeks.

“It’s basically a whole season in three weeks,” Martin County coach Robin Newsome said. “Not counting the practice days when not playing games. It isn’t easy.”

The team’s experiences last week included a slew of games at Knott Central and the Marshall University team camp, where they went 3-0. They defeated Wayne County 36-31, dominated Lincoln County 63-34 and took down Logan 31-25 in Huntington on June 9.

“We have a very young team at times, starting two eighth-graders and a freshman,” said Newsome of her young Cardinals. “Our JV consists mostly of seventh and eighth graders and freshmen. I’ve seen a lot of growth in the younger kids. They just need to get stronger and keep working.”

She encourages the girls to practice every day.

“It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” she added.

Newsome plans to take her team to play in the Aries League on Wednesday (July 18).

The squad will wrap up the summer stint Saturday at Kentucky Christian University before the dead period arrives.

“Proud of all the kids who got to experience the camps,” said Newsome. “Vandy was just amazing and getting to attend Marshall close to home was nice.”

The coach asks for prayers for two of her players who were involved in an ATV accident Sunday.
