SALYERSVILLE — Martin County High School’s varsity baseball team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Johnson Central on May 19 in the first round of the 57th District Tournament at Magoffin County.
The Eagles hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to conclude the Cardinals season.
Martin County initially took the lead in the top of the first inning. Adian Horn reached first at leadoff before Damian Cheek knocked a single and drove his teammate in for the first score.
Jack Cline subbed in as a pinch runner for Cheek. Crayson Lafferty rocked a grounder to advance his fellow Cardinal into home and a 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
Johnson Central evened the score in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly.
The game remained tied at two runs apiece until an Eagle single brought home the winning run for Johnson Central in the bottom of the seventh.
Cheek and Lafferty finished the night with a hit and RBI.

Horn collected a single and scored one run for Martin County.
Chase Stacy rang out a hit for the Cards and took a free walk to first. He took the loss for Martin County on the mound surrendering one run on three hits in one-third of an inning.

Caige Presley started for the Cardinals only giving up two hits and one run over two innings. He struck out one and walked one.
Knox Maynard hurled two innings and allowed no hits while striking out one.

Aidan Mann tossed 50 pitches in two innings and allowed only two hits and one run while striking out a batter.
