Lady Cards roll past Blackcats on senior night

INEZ — Martin County sent Prestonsburg packing in a 12-9 senior night win on May 14.

The soon-to-be graduates were honored in a ceremony before the first at-bat.

“It was great to get a win against a good squad on senior night. We played together as a team,” head coach Boo Newsome said. “Everyone contributed to the win, including our seniors. It was a great day honoring them and celebrating their careers in the program. They are a coach’s dream and we will miss them very much.”

Three Cardinals were also recognized for their achievements.

Alyssa Mullins and Zoie Hinkle received awards for 100 strikeouts on the dirt. Bella Muncy received recognition for 100 hits.

The Cards went to the top of the fifth with a 9-2 lead. With the Blackcats up to bat, Raegan Horn caught a short line drive at second for the first out.

Sophie Harless beat the runner at first for the second out.

On the hot corner, Haley Robinson wrangled in a grounder and fired to first for the final out of the inning.

After a scoreless bottom-of-the-frame for Martin County, Prestonsburg pushed back with a triple and pulled within three runs.

The Lady Cards escaped the inning on runner’s interference when Harless tried to gather up a grounder.

Alyssa Mullins had herself a night and smacked a double in the bottom of the sixth to see Harless score.

With Mullins and Keilan Jewell on base, Horn stepped into the batter’s box and slugged a solo shot to score both Cardinals for a 12-6 lead heading into the final inning.

The Blackcats wouldn’t go away and rallied to pull back within three again.

Mullins stepped in on the mound to hold the bats in check.

With runners on, a Prestonsburg hit found Robinson at third base. She gathered herself and made the throw to Mia Fields for the third and final out to seal the senior night win.

Mullins went a perfect 4-4 at the plate clubbing a double. She drove in a Lady Cardinal runner and crossed home twice. She tossed 23 pitches in relief and struck out a batter.

Horn went 3-3 in the box. She plated one run and recorded an RBI.

Endicott banged out two hits and drove in a Cardinal. She stole four bases en route to a score.

Slugger Bella Muncy recorded two hits and scored two runs.

Harless went 2-4 at the plate crossing home twice and driving in a run. She stole a base for good measure.

Jewell belted out two hits and drew two walks.

Pinch runner Marlee Grayson was hard at work with a stolen base and she plated three runs.

Alice Lloyd College signee Zoie Hinkle blasted a hit and brought in a runner.

On the mound, she hurled six innings on 73 pitches. Hinkle recorded five strikeouts and only walked two.

Martin County was scheduled to play Johnson Central in the 57th District Tournament on Monday night. Details were not available at press time.
