AUXIER — A man sought in connection with a fatal shooting in Floyd County is behind bars on a charge of murder after his arrest Saturday night, authorities said.
The man, Larry Johnson, 67, of Auxier, had been the subject of a police search since Friday afternoon after officers responded to reports of a shooting near the Auxier bridge.
When Kentucky State Police troopers arrived shortly before 3 p.m., they found Steven Adkins, 48, of Prestonsburg, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Adkins was transported to Highlands Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said Johnson fled the scene by vehicle before abandoning it and escaping on foot into a densely wooded area near Jane Brown Branch.
The search for Johnson ended Saturday night when the Prestonsburg Police Department announced his capture.
Johnson appeared Monday in Floyd District Court, where a judge set his bond at $5 million. His next court hearing is on the calendar for May 5 at 1:30 p.m.
