Major disaster declaration for 13 counties affected by April floods, storms and landslides

FRANKFORT — President Donald J. Trump approved a major disaster declaration for 13 Kentucky counties, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Friday.

The declaration unlocks federal aid for residents affected by historic flooding, severe storms, landslides and more in early April.

Residents and business owners in the following counties can apply for federal disaster assistance: Anderson, Butler, Carroll, Christian, Clark, Franklin, Hardin, Hopkins, Jessamine, McCracken, Mercer, Owen and Woodford counties.

Federal officials are still reviewing requests for Public Assistance in 33 counties and hazard mitigation funding for the entire state.

“This declaration is crucial because so many Kentucky families have been significantly affected by this event, and the greatest impact has been felt by our families whose homes were flooded,” Gov. Beshear said in a statement. “We are again thankful to President Trump and his administration for approving this critical funding.”

The pending Public Assistance request covers Anderson, Barren, Butler, Campbell, Carroll, Christian, Clark, Elliott, Estill, Floyd, Franklin, Gallatin, Green, Greenup, Hardin, Hickman, Hopkins, Jessamine, Johnson, LaRue, Lawrence, Lee, Logan, McCracken, Mercer, Muhlenberg, Owen, Owsley, Pendleton, Spencer, Union, Washington and Woodford counties.

Gov. Beshear’s office said it would seek to add more counties to the Individual Assistance list through amendments once damage assessments conclude.

In the wake of the storms, Gov. Beshear urged local officials to launch federal damage assessments, the release states. He also advised residents to document storm damage before beginning cleanup and to report it to local emergency management agencies.

In response to days of rain, severe storms, flooding and landslides beginning April 2, Gov. Beshear declared a state of emergency, activated the State Emergency Operations Center, and issued an executive order banning price gouging. He renewed the anti-gouging measure April 17.
