FRANKFORT — State Representative Bobby McCool of Van Lear has introduced House Bill 616, a measure designed to bring fairness and transparency to electric utility billing. The measure would remove taxes, fees and other charges on electric bills that are not directly related to electricity service and connection requirements.
“Electricity bills across the state have steadily increased, and many Kentuckians are feeling the strain of higher costs,” McCool said in a press release. “Families and businesses deserve to know exactly what they’re paying for, without unrelated charges. This bill would ensure that ratepayers no longer have to take on costs other than that of providing electricity.”
HB 616 prohibits the utility from collecting taxes, charges, and fees from the ratepayer for any costs other than those directly related to the electric service. The measure would also prevent utilities from adding third-party fees and unrelated surcharges to their customers’ bills, ultimately lowering costs for the ratepayer. HB 616 requires utility companies to be transparent with their customers and to practice fair and transparent billing practices.
“Utility companies have to be upfront with their customers. Right now, many Kentuckians open their electric bills and see extra charges and fees that have nothing to do with the power they use,” added McCool. “The goal of House Bill 616 is to put an end to that, making bills more affordable, transparent, and fair.”
