Elva Mae Muncy Hail

1930—2025

Elva Mae Muncy Hail 94, of Inez, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, at the Martin County Healthcare Facility in Inez.

Elva, the first child of James C. and Oma Dials Muncy, was born Feb. 23, 1930, to be followed by six brothers.

She graduated from Warfield High School in 1946 and attended Pikeville Junior College in 1946-1947. Her first year to teach was 1947-1948 as an emergency teacher in Martin County. Elva graduated from Pikeville Junior College in 1950. She taught for six years in Martin County, attending evening classes and summer school at Morehead State College.

In 1953 she began teaching in Dayton, Ohio, returning to Morehead for summer school. She graduated from Morehead in 1956. She married Joseph Hail in 1959. Elva received a master’s degree in education from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, in 1964. She was a certified teacher, counselor and school administrator. She retired from the Dayton City School System in 1978.

Elva worked in Mingo County, West Virginia, for over 14 years, attending night classes at West Virginia University and Marshall University. Her parents financed her first year of college and she worked to afford herself the next five years. For over 43 years she worked: 30 years as a teacher – grades 1-8, eight years as a counselor, two years as a curriculum coordinator, one year as a diagnostic/prescriptive teacher and over two years as a lead teacher in several schools. In her spare time she worked at a department store, sold real estate and played golf.

Elva is survived by two brothers, John Muncy of Inez and Bady Muncy of Hustonville, one sister-in-law, Jean Muncy of Inez, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Oma Muncy and four brothers, Curtis, Glenn, Gary and James Muncy.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025, at the Callaham Funeral Home in Inez, with Tom Dials officiating. Burial followed at the Muncy Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Callaham Funeral Home, Inez.
