Ernest Lackey
1939—2025

Ernest Lackey, 85, of Dingess, West Virginia, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2025, at the Logan Regional Medical Center in Logan.

He was born Feb. 13, 1939, on Marrowbone to the late Ishmael Lackey and Louise Meade Lackey.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Evalina Messer Lackey and four siblings, Eve Jarrells, Gladys (Rush) Williams, Murrell Lackey and Truman Lackey; sisters-in-law Delilah Lackey, Sheila Lackey and Mary Lackey and brothers-in-law Anthony Ray Fitzpatrick, Robert Brumfield and Carl Stepp.

Ernest was a Korean War veteran with the United States Air Force. He was a coal miner and electrician and retired from Kermit Coal Company. He was also a member of the Mount Hope Baptist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge at Kermit #167. His favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing.

Ernest is survived by his four children, Nicole (Leslie) Lackey Dillon, Ronald Ray (Carla) Vinson, Ernest Ishmael (Cheryl) Lackey, Sandra D. Lackey and Steven (Kathy) Lackey; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Helen Stepp, Cora Dillon, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, Arnold “Babe” (Florence) Lackey, James (Lisa) Lackey and Carson Lackey; brother-in-law John Jarrells; and a host of nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by special cousins Kimberly (Ronnie) Wilson May and Kevin (Beth) Wilson, special great-nieces Bella and Karstyn Robinson, along with special friends and neighbors William Mullen, Carla Ramey, the Deskins and Marcum families, Scott and Payton Wilson and their children, Kirsten Grimmett, Roy and Alice Messer.

Special thanks to Dignity Hospice, doctors and staff at Logan Regional Medical Center, and nurses of MICU, ICU and LRMC.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, at the Mount Hope Freewill Baptist Church in Dingess. Burial followed at the Lackey Cemetery on Marrowbone.

Pallbearers: Gary Wolford, Brendan Wolford, Troy Vinson, Jamie Robinson, Anthony Fitzpatrick, Todd Fitzpatrick, Randall Fitzpatrick, Jeremy Pilkins and Scott Wilson.
