A professor in a world-acclaimed medical school once posed this medical situation—and ethical problem—to his students: “Here’s the family history: The father has syphilis, the mother has TB, and they already have had four children. The first is blind, the second had died, the third is deaf, the fourth has TB. Now the mother is pregnant again, and the parents come to you for advice. They are willing to have an abortion if you decide they should. What do you say?”
The students gave various individual opinions, and then the professor asked them to break into small groups for “consultation.” All of the groups came back to report that they would recommend abortion.
“Congratulations,” the professor said, “You just took the life of Beethoven!”
Every person matters to Jesus. Even the unborn He knows and has a plan for that life. Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”
There is no child that Jesus does not love or want to come to Him. Matthew 19:14: “But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
Again I say that every life matters to Jesus. John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” That whosoever is you, me, everyone.
Every life, every person, matters and even our troubles matter to Jesus. He knows what we are going through and will help us through our troubles and trials. Matthew 11:28: “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”
The last invitation is in the last chapter in the Bible. This is a clear indication that everyone’s eternal destination matters to Jesus. He makes one last plea for those to come to Him because every life matters to Jesus. Revelation 22:17: “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”
Every life is important to God, the unborn, the newborn, the young and the old. If your life matters to God, what does God matter to you? Do you care that He cares? Does it make a difference in your life? It should.
How ungrateful is the person who rejects sacrificial love? Christ gave Himself for our sins. He died so that we, by faith and trust in Christ, might have life eternal.
How ungrateful is the soul that says “no” to Jesus? How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? (Hebrews 2:3)
Every person matters not because we are important to the world’s economy or because we are important to our families. Every life matters because we matter to God.
