NAUGATUCK, W.Va. — The Tug Valley Panthers hosted the third annual Kaydence Maynard Memorial Classic, defeating Calvary Baptist 71-63 Friday before losing a buzzer-beater in the finale Saturday to Phelps 59-57.
Tug Valley 71, Calvary Baptist 63
Braydun Ferris scored seven and Carson Newsome six in the first quarter to help Coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson’s Panthers take a 21-14 first-quarter lead over Calvary Baptist on Friday.
The Panthers outscored the Calvary squad 22-14 in the second quarter to take a 43-28 lead into the dressing room at the half. Kaden Hale and Ethan Ferrell each scored 7 in the second 8:00 minutes to help their team build on the lead.
The feisty Calvary squad outscored Tug Valley 23-15 in the third period to battle back, but the Panthers held on down the stretch to pull out the victory.
Ferris led Tug Valley with 20 points and he dished out three assists. Newsome finished with 17 points, Hale with 11, Ashton Davis had nine, Bryson Elia and Ethan Ferrell each chipped in seven points. Elia had six rebounds, three assists and a couple of blocks. Hale had five boards and Davis a couple of blocks to help TV to the win.
Bryson Childers took game-high scoring honors and led Calvary Baptist with 24 points, while Caleb Skeens added 19 for the losing team.

Phelps 59, Tug Valley 57
The Phelps Hornets upset Tug Valley 59-47 on a buzzer-beater Saturday in the finale of the Kaydence Maynard Memorial Classic.
Jahmar Stewart was the hero for the visitors hitting the winning shot. With the game tied at 57-57, the shot was a wild reverse that banked through at the buzzer.
Tug Valley’s Braydun Ferris had tied the game at 57-all on a nice 5-foot bank shot with 10.5 seconds left. Then Stewart drove the length of the floor. The ball was actually deflected out of his hands, but he retrieved it and made the incredible winning shot for the win.
Tug Valley led 34-30 at halftime, but Phelps outscored the Panthers 11-8 in the third period and 18-15 in the final period to pull out the win.
Ferris led Coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson’s team with 23 points. Kaden Hale scored 12, Ashton Davis 10, Ethan Ferrell 6, Bryson Elia 4 and Carson Newsome 2.
The Panthers were 43% shooting from the field but only made 3-11 three-pointers for 27%. They made 8-11 at the charity stripe for 73%.
Tyler Weddington led the Hornets of Coach Cameron Smith with 25 points, while Stewart got into double digits with 14.
The Hornets were 12-16 at the free throw line for 76% and shot 44% from the field. They also made a trio of three-pointers making 3-8 for 38%.
The Panthers, now 4-1, will travel to Tucker County on Jan. 3 and host Sherman on Jan. 7.
