An Old Way in the New Year

Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the WAY, the truth and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me.” God said about Himself in Malachi 3:6: “Behold I am the Lord, I change not.”

The Bible says about Jesus in Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever.”

Part of the curse of sin upon this world is that in this world things are always changing. Leaders are constantly changing (unless you are in Cuba. Castro has been in power since the 1950s.) Politicians change. Bosses change. Pastors change. The average pastorate is less than three years.

We change clothes every day. We change our minds. We change cars every few years. We change our home phone number five times in our lives. We change our cellphone numbers every three years. We change our email address every four years. We get a new smartphone every two years. We get a new computer every three years.

We go to college and change majors at least three times before we finish. More than 30% of college students do not graduate. We change jobs about seven times in our lifetimes.

We change homes. Millions of people move to a new residence every year. Some even move to another country. The average person changes residences about six times in their lives. We get a new pet about every eight years. We even change spouses. Only 54% of married people have been married only once! Keep in mind though that about 15% of those do not marry again due to divorce or the death of a spouse, shack up with someone without getting married. About 46% of married people will marry two or more times in their lifetime!

We change our appearance as we age. We change our likes and dislikes as we get older. What we used to love to do at 25 we have no interest in at 65. Our medical care constantly changes as we get older. We go from zero pills at age 35 to 35 pills at age 65. That’s amazing!

And worst of all, we change our minds about attending church. This is the great tragedy of our age. The United States Census Bureau Records give some startling statistics, according to Church Leadership.org: Every year 2.7 million church members leave church for good. For 52,000 people, this coming Sunday will be the last time they will attend church for a long time, maybe ever!

Even more discouraging is that every year more than 4000 churches close their doors! That’s 76 churches every week and this Sunday will be their last service!

I have done research that shows that only about 9% of the population is in church on any given Sunday. The United States now ranks third following China and India in the number of people who are not professing Christians; in other words, the U.S. is becoming an ever-increasing “unreached people group.”

The point is this: In this ever-changing world where we can’t really count on anybody or anything, the Lord stands as a beacon of truth, a foundation of strength that will never change.

Four things about God will never change.

1. His character will not change. God is love, justice, mercy and grace.

2. His purpose will not change. He is the God of creation and redemption. His eternal glory brings about our eternal good.

3. His word will not change. The word of the Lord endures forever! God will not add anything to His word nor take away anything from it.

4. God will not change His opinion of sin or His plan of salvation.

For the new year we must attach our lives to the Solid Rock of Jesus Christ or we are left to the shifting sands of life that will sweep us away!
