Applause for Inez Fire department

Martin County knows the meaning of community support and nowhere is that spirit stronger than in the Inez Volunteer Fire Department.

This week we celebrate the department’s success in securing two major grants and the county’s role in matching support.

The Inez department secured a $213,000 grant from FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters program and a $65,000 grant from the USDA. These funds will go toward essential lifesaving equipment: self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs), a new jet boat for water rescues and a battery-powered Jaws of Life.

Each of these additions will allow firefighters to respond faster, more safely, and with greater efficiency in life-threatening situations.

For our volunteer firefighters and those depending on them, every new tool makes a difference.

Now let us point out that Inez is an all-volunteer department. These volunteers balance jobs, families and daily responsibilities, yet they respond to every call. They reflect the very best of our county—a willingness to protect and serve without expectation of anything in return.

Chief Lee Gauze and his team competed against departments nationwide for FEMA funding and they deserved the funding.

With 20 new SCBAs, the department can now equip every seat in its trucks with essential breathing equipment, a major improvement over the previous supply of just 12 air packs.

The new jet boat will allow firefighters to reach people in low-water areas that were previously challenging to access. A modern Jaws of Life will simplify rescue operations with an easy, battery-powered setup.

Again, what is good for the department is good for the community.

A well-deserved thanks also goes to the Martin County Fiscal Court, which stepped up by providing over $26,000 in local match requirements using American Rescue Plan Act funds. This investment is good leadership. Thanks for answering the call.
