CITIZEN STAFF REPORT
INEZ — This Monday, Martin County residents have a chance to make a difference by donating blood at a drive hosted by the Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) in Inez. The event, organized by local student Hadley Spence, will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Martin County Public Library/Collier Center.
Hadley Spence’s personal connection to the cause is close to her heart.
“Hadley’s baby brother, Maverick, received a blood transfusion while in the NICU,” explains her mother, Brittany Spence. Hadley’s initiative, “Hadley’s Hope,” is all about giving back to NICU families.
“Children with Down syndrome are 33% more likely to develop blood cancer,” Brittany notes. “We fight for our Maverick and for everyone who is fighting cancer or needing blood products for whatever reason. Come help us fight.”
Donors at the drive will receive a free “Fight Cancer” T-shirt.
According to the KBC, around 25% of the nation’s blood supply is used by cancer patients. But the need goes beyond cancer—trauma, transplants and blood disorders all rely on donated blood. One in four people will need a transfusion in their lifetime, the center adds.
To donate, individuals must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh 110 pounds or more, and be in good health. A photo ID is required.
Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged. To schedule, visit kybloodcenter.org, scan the QR code below, or call 800-775-2522.
You can also begin the process from the comfort of your home or office using QuickPass (kybloodcenter.org/quick-pass):
- You must complete the QuickPass process only on the day of your donation.
- You must answer the questions honestly and confidentially.
- QuickPass does not determine your eligibility to donate; that will be done at the time of your donation.
- You must complete the questions in a single session. If the system times out, you will have to start over.
- If there is a question you don’t understand or don’t know the answer to, please skip it and go to the next question.
- You will need access to a printer, or you can take a screenshot of the QR code to show to KBC staff at registration.
- If you are unable to access or complete your QuickPass, please complete the questionnaire in person at your blood donation location.
- Visit our Donor QuickPass FAQ below for answers to questions you may have about the process.
- You may also want to review Donation Tips and Consent to Donate prior to your donation.
- Please note: QuickPass is not the same as an appointment to donate.
KBC provides blood services to 90 counties across Kentucky, with donor centers located in Lexington, Louisville, Frankfort, Pikeville, Somerset and the Tri-County area (Corbin).
