INEZ — Martin County High School Soccer had a record year for players signing to play in college. Earlier this year Lady Cards standout Kaitlyn Gauze signed to continue her soccer career at the University of Charleston (W.Va.). Last week the boys team had three to sign to play in college.
Reece Merrill signed with University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, while Isaiah Zuidema and Jestin Barker signed with Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes.
All four players grew up playing soccer together in the Martin County Youth Soccer League. All were a part of the first teams ever to play soccer for Martin County Middle School and the boys were a part of some of the first high school boys program after its approval.
All three boys were also a part of the MCHS boys record season that advanced to the semifinals of the 15th Region tournament.
Reece Merrill finishes his high school career with 46 goals and 25 assists. He was voted to the All-District and All-Region teams twice. Reece has played club soccer for Eastern Elite for the past seven years. He was also a part of record season for Eastern Elite, advancing to the U.S. President’s Cup Regional Final. He plans to study health science while attending the University of Cumberlands.
