PRESTONSBURG — Two Martin County golfers will compete in the state All “A” Classic following their success in the 15th Region All “A” on Aug. 20 at Stonecrest Golf Course.
Junior Kenadie Evans claimed her first 15th Region All “A” championship with a score of 93, while senior Jaylee Deskins followed with a 97 to finish second. The two defeated golfers from Paintsville, Shelby Valley and Betsy Layne to take the top two spots, earning appearances in the state tournament Sept. 8 at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond.
This will be Evans’ first appearance and Deskins’ second consecutive.
For the first time, Martin County fielded a complete girls’ team in the regional tournament: Evans, Deskins, junior Hannah Swartz and seventh-grader Mia James. As a team the Lady Cardinals finished second.
“It was a hard-fought match coming down to the last hole,” Martin County coach Boo Newsome said. “I am proud of our team for being able to compete as a team. This gives the program a bright future. Kenadie and Jaylee have put the time in all season to get ready for this moment, and they go 1-2.
The boys team also competed in the All “A” regional tournament. Although the outcome was not what the team had hoped for, Newsome emphasized their progress, noting that they are a young team with only one senior. The team includes senior Drew Wilson, junior Avery Duncan, sophomore Gaven Grace, freshman Dylan Hale and eighth-grader Ryder Duncan.
