WARFIELD — The Lady Cards picked up two wins Aug. 15 at Martin County Middle School. The A-team pulled away in the second half for a 44-32 win over Dorton. Likewise the B-team squeezed by with a 27-22 victory for a 2-0 record to begin the season.
Dorton jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Bri Muncy put the Cards on the scoreboard with a short jumper.
Annaleigh Davis and Anna Hinkle added to the mix to bring Martin County within one by the end of the first quarter.
Hinkle hit some key shots to keep Martin County within reach. She scored seven in the first half.
With one minute remaining before intermission, Kennedy Mills dished a pass to Davis to pull within one.
Dorton scored a bucket to head into the locker room with a 20-17 lead.
The Cards came out running in the second half. Davis began a 9-0 run with a steal and a lay-up at the other end.
Lexi Cline came alive and knocked down a 3 and two free throws with time winding down in the third. She capped off the run with a long two to end the quarter up 35-26.
Dorton began the final stanza with two buckets.
Cline challenged their run with string music at the 3.
Mills pulled down her 10th rebound and went back up for the final bucket of the game and a Cardinals win.
Davis led all scorers with 16 points. Cline and Hinkle came in clutch and scored 10 points each. Muncy chipped in with six and Mills with two.
K.B. Muncy started the B-team contest with four quick points for the Cards. Bradlyne Stafford sunk a free throw to give Martin County a 5-4 lead after the opening period.
Alivia Stacy dropped in five second-quarter points to send the Cards to halftime only down two.
The Red and White came back onto the court fired up. Zoe Sammons picked Dorton’s pocket and drove the length of the floor for an easy bucket.
Kinslee Callaham hit a deep corner 3 to open the second half on a 5-0 run.
Frosh guard Harleigh Maynard tickled the twine for her first career 3 for a 23-17 lead in the final quarter.
KB Muncy pulled down a board and kicked it out to Maynard for another bucket.
Dorton would not go away and answered with a 3-ball.
With the Cardinals up three with 14 seconds to go, Sammons buried a shot to send Dorton packing.
Sammons led all scorers with seven points. Maynard, Callaham and Stacy each had five in a balanced scoring effort. KB Muncy finished with four points and Stafford chipped in one.
