PRESTONSBURG — The Martin County Cardinals competed in the Pikeville Invitational Tournament at Stonecrest Golf Course on Saturday.

The PIT is one of the state’s largest tournaments, drawing top players from across the region.

A total of 105 golfers participated in the event on a hot August day at Stonecrest.

This tournament marked the fourth of the season for junior Avery Duncan and eighth-grader Ryder Duncan.

Coach Boo Newsome has arranged a challenging schedule for the Cardinals, urging all players to participate in these competitive events.

Avery Duncan started strong with a birdie on the fifth hole but finished with a score of 122. Ryder Duncan, who began the round one over par through the first three holes, rallied on the back nine to achieve a personal tournament-best score of 94.

The Cardinals continue to improve with each tournament.

“Our team is very young, but our conditioning is getting better,” Coach Newsome said. “The more they play, the better they will get.”
