OnPoint Swish second in region after win

NORTH CAROLINA — The OnPoint Swish hit the road this past weekend for two games in the Women’s American Basketball Association.

Makayla Epps led the way with 25 points, four rebounds and two assists in a 70-58 win over the Greensboro Kaos on July 28.

JaVonna Layfield had 15 points, three rebounds and two assists. Team organizer Carla Booth followed with 12 points, one rebound and an assist.

Dasia Thornton had nine points and pulled down four boards. Transylvania star Kennedi Stacy pitched in with six points, four rebounds and two assists. Dena Jarrells added four points.

On July 27, the Swish looked to avenge their earlier loss the prior weekend to Raleigh and nearly defeated the Aces in a 95-88 affair. Raleigh hit 22 three-pointers in front of the Martin County crowd in Swish’s earlier loss.

The rematch saw Epps pour in 19 points against the Aces with four assists and three rebounds.

Two Swish players had a double-double on the day. Layfield had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Thornton flipped in 12 points and pulled down 10 boards along with three assists.

Booth added 13 points and two rebounds.

E’moni Washington and Katie Fuller had six points.

Stacy fired in six points and dished out three assists with two boards. Jarrells pitched in with five points. Courtney Fletcher nailed a 3 and Taylor Pearson chipped in with two points.

OnPoint sits at 2-2 on the season and is second in their South Region.

The Swish return to Inez on Saturday, Aug. 3. They will take on the Gastonia Greyhounds at 6 p.m. at Martin County High School.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for school-aged children.
