Workers collect 12.3 tons of trash
“We are asking prospective haulers how they would like to address customers who paid in advance in the bid packet. With their input, it should help us come up with a clear solution.” –Judge/Executive Colby Kirk

INEZ — County workers picked up 12.3 tons (24,580 pounds) of trash in three days last week in District 4.
Martin County Judge/Executive Colby Kirk said workers had covered all of District 4 by the end of the day Friday.
“We may have missed a few places where the previous hauler picked it up on customers’ porches or next to their garages,” Kirk said. “We had a few calls last week about places we had missed like that, and we sent a smaller truck back to get it.”
Before the county stepped in last week, hundreds of District 4 residents reported their garbage had not been picked up for three weeks.
The Martin County Fiscal Court voted April 26 to terminate the contract of former District 4 trash hauler Joe’s Garbage Removal and is advertising for proposals for a new hauler.
Kirk said the county is covering the cost of District 4 garbage pickup for the time being.
“Once a new hauler is selected at the next fiscal court meeting, customers will have to pay them,” said Kirk. “We are asking prospective haulers how they would like to address customers who paid in advance in the bid packet. With their input, it should help us come up with a clear solution.”
