INEZ — Martin County Hall of Famer Carla Booth continues to bring history to Inez. The OnPoint Ballers owner has started a women’s semi-pro basketball team in the Women’s American Basketball Association and will play four games at Martin County High School.

The team features some players who are well-known to Kentucky fans.

Makayla Epps, Miss Kentucky Basketball 2013 and the daughter of former Wildcats player Anthony Epps, played for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. The Chicago Sky drafted her as the 33rd overall pick in the WNBA draft.

Magoffin County native and 2023 Division III National Champ Kennedi Stacy will be on the semi-pro team. She recently graduated from Transylvania and played five years for the Pioneers. Stacy’s team, at one point, had the NCAA’s longest active win streak regardless of sport or gender with 64 wins in a row.

Founder Carla Booth is a 15th Region Champ who played for Sheldon Clark. Booth is a Hall of Famer at Alice Lloyd College and an NAIA All-American. She was second in the nation in scoring during her senior year and led the KIAC conference.

“In the era of refreshed interest in women’s sports, it feels empowering to be a part of this team. I’m grateful to have a stage for women to showcase their skills, all the while getting to continue my playing career,” Booth expressed.

“Basketball is the heart and soul of our state. To be able to bring this level of sport to eastern Kentucky is a blessing. It can provide opportunities to invest in our area economically and involve members of the community.”

The league will bring teams and fans from out of state to Inez.

Jason Wefenstette, who has coaching experience with Martin County, is the head coach of OnPoint Swish.

Fallyne Wefenstette is the media relations representative and manager.

Local 15th Region officials will officiate the games.

The first home game will be July 20 versus Raleigh out of North Carolina.

On Aug. 3 the Swish will face off against Gastonia.

Atlanta will be in Inez the next weekend and Greensboro comes to town Aug. 24.
