INEZ — The Martin County Board of Education and the Retired Teachers Association recognized three fifth-graders for being winners in the “Grandparent of the Year” essay contest.

The BOE “student spotlight” April 11 shined on Inez Elementary School fifth grader Hope Caldwell,  who won the competition at IES and the county level and placed second in the Big Sandy Area; Warfield Elementary winner Ben Kinser; and Eden winner Kylie Alexander.

“We like to recognize our students, and that wouldn’t be possible without the support of our parents and grandparents,” Schools Superintendent Larry James said.

Charlotte Anderson from the Martin County Retired Teachers Association said the annual essay contest is sponsored by AARP Kentucky and organized by local retired teachers associations, who helped secure school participation and served as local contest judges.
