Lady Cards pick up win

INEZ — The Martin County Lady Cardinals softball team (8-12) went 1-1 last week. The Cards rolled over Powell County (5-11) with a 15-5 score and fell in district play versus Paintsville (8-16).

The following is a recap of last week’s action:

MCHS vs. Powell County

The Lady Cards cruised past Powell County 15-5 Saturday in five innings in a game played at Knott County.

The Pirates scored two runs in the top of the first inning and another two in the top of the second for a 4-0 advantage.

The Lady Cards turned things up on their turn to bat in the bottom of the second.

Kaylee Endicott ignited the offense with a leadoff single, followed by six consecutive walks.

Freshman Mia Fields delivered a double driving in three runs.

Powell County narrowed the gap to 7-5 with a run in the third.

The Lady Cards responded with six runs in the bottom of the third to extend the lead to 13-5.

Martin County continued the offensive onslaught, adding two more runs to seal the mercy-rule victory in the fifth.

Alyssa Mullins secured the win for the Lady Cards on the mound, allowing five runs on six hits.

Despite managing just six hits, the Lady Cards capitalized on 12 walks.

Endicott went 2-4 with two singles. Fields was 1-3 with a double. Kaylee Phillips went 1-3 with a

single.

MCHS vs. Paintsville

The Paintsville Lady Tigers narrowly escaped the Martin County Lady Cards 5-3 in seven innings in 57th District softball action May 8 in Paintsville.

The Lady Cards got on the board first with one run in the first inning. Paintsville scored in the bottom of the first to tie the score 1-1.

Martin County picked up two runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Hallee Preece knocked a single into the dirt.

Paintsville gave up two walks and allowed two passed balls.

The Lady Tigers narrowed Martin County’s lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third.

The Tigers kept things going in the bottom of the fourth. Paintsville added on three runs to take a 5-3 lead and close out the rest of the game.

The Lady Cards had two hits while committing three errors.

Paintsville had seven hits while committing two errors.

Martin County left 11 runners on base while Paintsville left only six.

Kira Ratliff picked up the win on the mound for the Tigers. She pitched all seven innings, walking 12 batters and striking out 12.

Alyssa Mullins took the loss on the mound for the Lady Cards. She went seven innings and gave up five runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out two.

The girls are back in action Wednesday (May 15) on their home field with a double-header versus Paintsville and Knott County. Game time is 6 p.m.
