INEZ — Over 300 people came out to enjoy the Kiwanis Club’s annual Hillbilly Breakfast, according to Kiwanis president Melissa Phelps.

The May 4 event at Inez Elementary School offered an all-you-can-eat buffet of gravy, biscuits, eggs, sausage, bologna, fried potatoes, fried apples, chocolate gravy and assorted drinks for $6.

“I’ve heard good feedback about all of our food,” Phelps reported during a Kiwanis Club meeting Thursday.

“[Martin County High School FCCLA adviser] Connie Harless brought a couple of her students and they learned how to make some gravy.”

Phelps also praised Inez resident Blanche Pemberton for showing Kiwanis Club members “how to cook eight dozen scrambled eggs at a time” in the oven.

“They were fluffier,” said Phelps of Pemberton’s method. “It worked out good and we had fun.”

The annual breakfast funds scholarships for local students, thanks to those who come out for breakfast, multiple sponsors, and the Warfield IGA’s generous donation of $1,000 worth of food.

“We couldn’t do this without them,” Phelps said. “Be sure to thank [owners Brad Pack and Judy Walker Ousley] and show them your gratitude by shopping at their store.”
