Lady Cards on 3-game win streak

INEZ — The Martin County High School Lady Cards softball team rolled past Grace Christian 7-6 and Tolsia in a doubleheader 10-4, 13-9 to win three in a row April 23 and Saturday in Inez.

The following is a recap of last week’s action:

MCHS vs. Grace Christian

Martin County avenged an earlier season loss versus Grace Christian on Saturday in Inez. The Martin Countians pulled out a come-from-behind 7-6 win against the Crusaders.

The Lady Cards got off to a rocky start falling behind 4-0 in the first inning.

Things started looking up for the home team in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore Alyssa Mullins led off with a single. Sophie Harless advanced on ball four.

Newcomer Mia Fields slapped a double to score Mullins and Harless. The Cards ended the second inning down one run 4-3.

The bottom of the sixth was a momentum swing for the Cardinals.

Hallee Preece advanced to first on a walk. Harless showed a bunt and laid one down to put two on the bags for Martin County.

This paved the way for Raegan Horn.

Facing a hitter’s count at 1-0, Horn swatted a double to score both runners and go ahead 5-4.

Grace Christian rallied in the top of the seventh to reclaim the lead 6-5.

The bottom of the seventh was showtime for the ladies in red and white.

Junior hitter Kaylee Endicott ignited the inning with a single. Keilan Jewell hit a zinger to reach second and set the stage for the final show.

Mullins had one more in her arsenal. She was looking at two outs and a full count. The ice-cold swinger unleashed a line drive between short and third to drive in two runs and seal the deal for the Lady Cards 7-6.

Mullins picked up the win at the mound. She recorded five strikeouts. Mullins was 2-4 at bat including the two game-winning RBIs.

Fields went 2-3 and knocked in two RBIs.

Bella Muncy, Endicott and Jewell all singled.

“I’m proud of our kids for not quitting,” Martin County assistant coach Robin Newsome said. “They battled the whole game and pulled it out in the end. This was a good win for our girls.”

MCHS vs. Tolsia

Martin County shot down the Tolsia Lady Rebels in a doubleheader April 23 at home, 10-4, 13-9.

The Lady Cardinals struck first to tack one on the scoreboard.

Bella Muncy advanced on an error. Keilan Jewell drove her home with a double.

The Cards began the fourth inning with a slim 3-2 lead.

MC heated up on a leadoff double from Alyssa Mullins. Raegan Horn, Mia Fields, Kaylee Endicott and Jewell all singled for a 6-2 score.

The Lady Cards stayed red-hot into the bottom of the sixth.

Martin County scored four runs, courtesy of singles by Haley Robinson and Fields. Mullins added a double to secure the win.

Mullins earned the win on the hill allowing only eight hits.

Jewell was 3-3 at the plate with two singles and a double. Fields and Mullins went 2-4.

Endicott slapped a single and a double. Robinson, Horn, Hallee Preece and Sophie Harless each added a single.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lady Cards jumped out 5-2 after the first inning.

Tolsia knotted the score up at five apiece in the top of the second.

Martin County responded with three runs in the third inning and never looked back for the win.

Robinson recorded the victory on the mound for the Lady Cardinals.

The girls are back in action Wednesday on their home field against region foe Magoffin County. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
