INEZ — A once-forgotten tradition for high school graduates is making a comeback, thanks to the efforts of Martin County resident Lana Jo Young and the community.
Young shared fond memories of Sheldon Clark High School’s “Project Graduation 1998” during a Kiwanis luncheon Thursday at Masterpiece Kitchen & Café in Inez.
“We thought it was the greatest thing ever to get locked in and spend one last celebration with our buddies,” Young recounted. “From midnight to 6 a.m., we played games, laughed, watched movies, did a lot of nonsense, and just had good, safe fun.”
The tradition had ceased at some point, but a revival proposal a couple of years ago prompted Young to take action. With support from the community, the event made a successful comeback.
This year, it returns with a new name: “Martin County High School Grad Bash.” The 2024 celebration, scheduled for May 23 from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Collier Center, will feature food, games, cash prizes, inflatables, and other entertainment for the graduates.
Last year’s event featured a mechanical bull courtesy of a generous donation from the Kiwanis Club.
“The kids had a wonderful time,” Young said. “We’re hoping to have as much success this year.”
She added, “It’s a way for these kids to have fun without drinking, partying or using social media. They really enjoy some good, old-fashioned fun.”
Members of the Grad Bash committee—Nathan Harless, Kara Beth Marcum, Amy Kerr, Boo Newsome, Machelle Ray, Thomas Ray, Melissa McCoy and Young—are currently seeking donations. The Kiwanis Club has already committed $500 towards the event.
