WARFIELD — Wrestlers Ashton “Parker” Maynard, Cole Jewell and Brody Jewell are the Auto Brokers Players of the Week.
The three matmen of Martin County Cardinals Wrestling showed out Saturday in the Heartland National Duals in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
They competed as members of the 16-player Team Kentucky against some of the best middle school wrestlers in the nation.
When the day was done, Team Kentucky, coached by the Bellarmine University wrestling staff, finished sixth overall in the gold bracket.
Maynard, reigning Kentucky state champion, went 7-1 in the 150-lbs class, pinning five opponents and beating one 6-4 sudden victory-1. His only loss was to a Pan Am placer in a very close, very winnable match.
Cole Jewell, a Kentucky state placer, bumped up from 150 lbs to 175 to fill a spot for his team and beat a champion out of Texas 6-4.
Brody Jewell, a Kentucky state runner-up, is a sixth grader who competed against middle school opponents. He pinned a man out of Kansas in 2 minutes and beat another Kansas wrestler 5-0.
Maynard and C. Jewell are students at Martin County Middle School. B. Jewell attends Warfield Elementary School.
