The Pastor’s Pen: How Do You Measure Evil?

Jack Ward, Pastor
Tomahawk Missionary Baptist Church

Some people claim there is no God because there is evil in the world. That is really a backward statement. Let me explain.

Is cold something that can be measured? Absolutely not. There is no measurement for cold. We measure heat only. What is greater? Heat or cold? Heat is greater because heat always overcomes cold.

Temperature is measured by the absence or addition of heat. You cannot measure cold. Air conditioners put out air made cold by the absence of heat.

Touch the back of an air conditioner. Is it hot or cold? It’s hot. Air conditioners take heat out of the air.

Can you measure darkness? Absolutely not. Darkness is the absence of light. There is no measure for darkness. What is greater? Light or dark? Darkness cannot overcome any light. There is no such thing as a “dark” bulb. We have “light” bulbs.

Can you measure thought? Absolutely not. Scientists call thought the “ghost in the machine.” A thought comes from the “Ghost” in the brain, not the brain. The brain cannot love. The brain cannot feel emotion. The brain is the process by which thoughts, emotions and feelings are transmitted for the body. Most people call this “ghost” the soul of man or even the Spirit of man that is eternal.
