PIKEVILLE — Martin County Lady Cardinals rolled over Phelps 78-38 Friday in the opening round of the girls 15th Region All “A” Classic at Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville.
Martin County entered the contest with a 9-4 record while Phelps was 10-2.
The Lady Cards were strictly business from the start to the finish. Led by the dynamic duo of Katie Marcum and Laken Williams, Martin County had a 20-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Sophomore Chloe May dialed up three 3-pointers to help the Lady Cards to 25 points and a 45-16 lead in the second quarter. May’s performance tied a girls’ basketball record for the most 3-pointers in a game. Lynndsey Cassell and Jaaliyah Warren previously set the record.
The third quarter was much the same with Martin County scoring 22 points for a 67-28 lead that put the game out of reach.
Martin County Coach Robin Newsome expressed pride in her team’s preparedness and shooting performance.
“We shot the ball extremely well, maybe the best we have all season,” Newsome commented.
Williams led Martin County with a game-high 16 points and eight boards. Brooke Marcum and Chloe May each finished with 15 points. Katie Marcum scored eight points and snatched 12 rebounds, Maci Maynard flipped in eight points and pulled down six boards, Kennadi Mollett netted six points and six rebounds, Alyssa Allen contributed six points, and Annaleigh Davis and Candice Spaulding each flipped in two.
For Phelps, Caleigh McCoy led with 11 points, Kylea Weddington and Kaylyn Slone each finished with nine, Bailey Norman netted three, and Madison Dotson, Katie Yates and Makaylee Sipple each chipped in two.
