Joseph William York Jr.
1947—2023
Joseph William York Jr., 76, of Lovely, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 8, 2023.
He was born Sept. 14, 1947, to the late Joseph William York Sr. and Sarilda York.
Joseph was the youngest of 12 children raised on Collins Creek Road in Warfield. He married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Evans, on June 4, 1966. They moved to Bellevue, Ohio, where he worked at Goodyear Tires.
Joseph and Wanda were blessed with two children, Christina and Joseph York III. His family moved back to Lovely in the early 1970s, where he worked at Ora Mae Coal Company and later retired from Sidney Coal Company.
Joseph gave his heart to Jesus and was a long-time member of Lovely Freewill Baptist Church.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was also a past Master of Warfield Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Evans York; his two children, Chrissy (Brian) Slone and Joey (Rhonda) York; four grandchildren, BJ (Samantha) Slone, Matt (Jayde) Slone, Dacia (Daniel) Harless and Joseph York. He has six great-grandchildren, Easton and Eli Slone, Vivi and Drew Slone, and Graycee and Maverick Harless. Anyone he talked to always heard about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was so proud of all of them.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters: James, Edward, Prentice, Walter, Dorothy, Elizabeth, Blanche, Bodine, Georgiann, Fern and Bell York.
Joe was a kind man who never met a stranger. He loved to say, “The Bible says a man who has friends must show himself friendly.” (Proverbs 18:24) Joe had no shortage of friends and will truly be missed. Although we will all grieve, solace can be found in the fact that Joe is now in the arms of God.
