KERMIT — Kermit will add a unique, first-ever feature at this year’s Christmas in the Park celebration: a live Nativity scene complete with a camel, donkey, sheep and a baby.

Kermit Councilwoman Tammy Preece Hodge announced the event, scheduled for Dec. 1 at Kermit Park.

“When I say ‘live,’ I mean a live camel, live donkey, live sheep and live baby,” Hodge said, extending an invitation to the community.

The annual Christmas celebration will commence at 6 p.m. with a parade organized by the Kermit Volunteer Fire Department. Following the parade, the tree-lighting ceremony will take place at Kermit Park.

This year, the honor of lighting the tree has been bestowed upon Anna Mae Sartin Wellman, a dedicated councilwoman and lifelong resident of Kermit.

In addition to the live Nativity, the Christmas in the Park will feature performances by children from the ABLE Families and Christian Help after-school program.

Attractions for children will include inflatables, while Mr. and Mrs. Claus have confirmed their attendance.

“We’ll have cookies, hot chocolate and a lot of good fellowship,” said Hodge.

The Kermit Council also encourages local church groups, businesses and residents to create displays along the walking track.

Reflecting on the upcoming festivities and her role in the community, Wellman expressed her gratitude for the honor of contributing to the town’s holiday spirit.

“I am proud that God has let me live for 87 years,” Wellman said. “I’ve decorated poles and everything else all over Kermit. I am proud to do this.”
