Matthew Sweeney
1970—2023
Matthew Sweeney, 53, of Pikeville, formerly of Inez, passed away Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023, at Cabell Huntington Hospital following an accident in Pilgrim.
Born Aug. 13, 1970, in Martin County, he was the son of Opal Chaffins Mullett of Lowmansville. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Adkins Sweeney, and two brothers, Milton and Marvin Sweeney.
Matthew was a retired coal miner and a member of the Martin County Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of seven years, Stephanie Moore Sweeney of Pikeville; his children, Matthew C. Litton of Georgetown, Bradley Sweeney of Pikeville, Mark Jude of Morehead, Brandon Adkins of Inez, Justin Adkins of Kentucky, Michael Williamson of Chattaroy, West Virginia, and Skyler Williamson of Morehead; three grandchildren, Eli and RayLynn Litton and Baby Bella. Matthew also leaves behind his siblings, James Sweeney of Boonescamp, Covie Sweeney of Inez and Becky Sweeney of Lowmansville; special friends, Dennis Scott, Abraham Moore and Bill Howard; and a host of extended family and friends.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2023, at the Martin County Freewill Baptist Church in Pilgrim. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Oct. 17, at noon at the church, with Henry Jay Jude, Jimmy Stanley and Doc Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in Muncy Cemetery in Pilgrim.
