Domestic Violence Awareness: Turning Point announces candlelight vigils

Turning Point Domestic Violence Services, a leading local nonprofit dedicated to serving survivors of domestic violence, invites everyone to participate in Domestic Violence Awareness Month, held annually in October, which allows communities nationwide to join forces to raise awareness about the far-reaching impact of domestic violence.

Turning Point aims to shed light on the pervasive issue of domestic violence and empower people to come together as communities to address this epidemic.

According to Elizabeth Fitch of Turning Point Kentucky, one in three women, one in four men, and nearly half of LGBTQ+ people will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. She writes, “High rates of domestic violence are not private, individual problems; they require community solutions. By acknowledging this reality, we can collectively work towards ending domestic violence and creating safe, healthy communities for everyone.”

Through a series of events and activities throughout the month, Turning Point Domestic Violence Services seeks to engage community members in an open dialogue about domestic violence, its underlying causes and how to support survivors. “We encourage everyone in the community to get involved and support the campaign during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.”

Some key highlights of the campaign include community candlelight vigils:

Oct. 12 – Pikeville City Park Gazebo – 6:30 p.m.

Oct. 19 – Prestonsburg City Stage – 6:30 p.m.

Oct. 26 – Mayo Campus Gazebo – 6:30 p.m.

Through these events and activities, Turning Point Domestic Violence Services aims to unite our community, encourage open conversations, and create a supportive environment where survivors can find hope and healing.

Turning Point Domestic Violence Services is a residential facility that provides emergency shelter as well as other advocacy services. Our approach is to make a difference in the lives of those affected by intimate partner violence through education, healing and wellness. Residential and non-residential clients are provided a comprehensive service program based on individual needs.

Based in Prestonsburg, the program serves the Big Sandy Area Development District, including Floyd, Johnson, Magoffin, Martin and Pike counties.

Clients can refer themselves or be referred by local law enforcement or community agencies. Services are provided to everyone, regardless of age, gender, race, religion or marital status.

Turning Point is a member of the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The project is funded by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, United Way of Eastern Kentucky, community support and donations. All services are provided free of charge for participants and their dependent children. The program imposes no income eligibility standards on individuals receiving assistance.
