WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — Two Williamson firefighters were injured when a building destroyed by fire late last week collapsed Sunday at approximately 5:15 a.m.

The fire that broke out on an upper floor Thursday rekindled Sunday morning due to hot spots remaining in the brick structure that housed Muncy Auto Parts at 68 W Fourth Avenue.

Demolition of the building was already contracted and scheduled, according to a release by Mayor Charlie Hatfield.

“The Williamson Fire Department responded to the call this morning, and during the call, the front wall of the building collapsed, injuring two of our firemen. One injured more severe than the other,” Hatfield stated.

Traffic on the roadway was rerouted Sunday.

The cleanup efforts were expected to take most of the day. Bricks and rubble were in the street.

Power in the immediate area was interrupted as well.

“All resources of the city are assisting,” said the mayor.

The building collapse damaged Williamson Fire Department equipment, including at least one fire truck.

“We can replace the damaged equipment, but the lives and safety of our firemen are not replaceable,” Hatfield added. “Please send prayers as they receive treatment for their injuries.”
