WARFIELD — In a meeting Thursday, the Warfield City Commission discussed the formulation of an ordinance aimed at prohibiting homeless encampments in response to the growing homeless population in the city.

Commissioner John Sammons emphasized the need for a draft to be ready by the next meeting.

Mayor Mike Hinkle, Sammons and Commissioners David Bell and Zane Speers discussed concerns about an encampment located on the creek bank behind the Warfield IGA.

City Clerk Rhonda Price will follow up on the ordinance at the next meeting.

In lighter news, Price unveiled the “Adopt A Flower Box” Christmas decorating contest. Warfield residents are encouraged to bring forth their festive creativity by decorating a flower box starting Nov. 1 and concluding by Nov. 30.

Public voting will be on the City of Warfield’s official Facebook page from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 1.

Tune in to Facebook live Dec. 2 live for the announcement of the winner. The winner will receive a $25 Walmart gift card.

Those keen on participating should notify Price about which flower box they intend to decorate. Contact Price either on Facebook or through the City Hall at 606-395-6423 from Monday to Thursday between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Warfield’s annual Drive-by Santa is on tap for 5 p.m. Dec. 2.

Commissioner Davey Bell mentioned the need to contact Kentucky Power regarding electrical boxes to support Christmas lights.

“They will come out and put them on the poles, but they haven’t told us exactly what we need to have,” Bells said.

The city plans to further communicate with Kentucky Power to clarify the specifics.
