INEZ — In honor of her lasting dedication to the county’s youth, Inez business owner Jackie (Moore) Parsons has been chosen as the 2023 grand marshal for the Martin County Harvest Festival Parade, scheduled for Sept. 16.
Parsons, the owner and operator of Jackie’s Gymnastics, boasts an impressive 41-year record of training young talents in tumbling and all-star cheer competitions. Few in the service sector can parallel her dedication and achievements.
A proud local, Parsons was born and raised in Martin County and is an alumna of Sheldon Clark High School class of 1980.
Her journey began shortly after her graduation. As a passionate cheerleader for the Cardinals during her schooling, Parsons started aiding Terry Varney, an ex-mascot for the UK cheer squad, in teaching gymnastics to the local youth. However, in 1982, when Varney transitioned to different pursuits, Shelly Hardin’s encouragement spurred Parsons to continue offering gymnastics lessons. Hardin’s spouse, Geri, was the proprietor of the former Lucille’s Dress Shop in Inez, where Parsons worked.
Reflecting on those days, Parsons remarked, “Without that kind of support and encouragement, I really don’t believe I would have gotten as far as I have. I love what I do, and to me, every child is a gift. I’m blessed to be their instructor.”
When approached for the role of this year’s Harvest Festival parade grand marshal, Parsons was deeply moved.
“I said, ‘Oh my gosh, are you serious?’ I can’t explain how humbled yet honored I am to receive this nomination,” said Parsons. “I’ve never received recognition for my years of commitment to the youth of the county, and it’s not ever bothered me; that’s not why I do it. This honor is sweeter and more appreciated than I could ever explain.”
Martin County Kiwanis Club president Melissa Phelps expressed her admiration for Parsons, saying, “She has impacted kids in our community for 41 years. We chose her because that is what the Kiwanis Club is all about. Just think of all the children’s lives she has influenced.”
Parsons provides gymnastic instruction Monday evenings at the Collier Center in Inez and has students from within the county and several from Mingo and Wayne counties. She also provides lessons in Johnson County and has students who travel from the Louisa area.
Although she has stepped back from teaching competition cheer, Parsons tumbling team, comprising students from various nearby counties, frequently showcases their talent at local events and festivals.
“They are a great group of students from Martin, Johnson, Lawrence and other nearby areas that come together as a team and always give a great performance,” said Parsons. “I am beyond proud of their skills and accomplishments.”
