PAINTSVILLE — Martin County’s Jake James had a strong showing on the greens Saturday as he shot an impressive 2 over par 72 at the Nelson and Cathy Gullett Invitational. He also received two college offers last week.

The tournament took place at the Paintsville Golf Course, hosted by Johnson Central High School.

James finished in fifth and 11th, earning him All-State points for the competitive event.

James hit 10 out of 13 fairways and 12 of 18 greens. He finished with three birdies on the day.

Coach Tom Posey from Kentucky Christian University recognized James’s potential and extended a scholarship offer to James to play at the next level.

Alice Lloyd College also officially offered James last week following his visit to campus and talk with the ALC golf coach.

James has several schools interested in him for the future.

James’s journey in golf has been short but successful. With only four years of experience under his belt, he first embraced the game for fun, eventually developing a deep passion for it. This newfound love for golf has driven him to excel.

“Jake is a great kid and any school would be blessed to have him,” Martin County golf coach Boo Newsome said. “He’s a hard worker, loves the game, and works hard to improve. He is only going to get better.”
