INEZ — This week’s Behind the Helmet introduces Martin County football players Damian Cheek and Kendal Mullins.

Damian Cheek #17

Junior Damian Cheek (#17) has seven football seasons under his belt. After transferring across county lines from Paintsville to Martin County, he quickly made himself at home as a linebacker for the Cardinals. He has proven he has the stamina and grit to handle things when the stakes are high in the game.

Damian says he finds inspiration to play hard in memory of his late grandmother.

His favorite thing about Martin County is “my friends and how all the sports are like family.”

A multi-sport athlete, Damian excels in baseball for the Cardinals as well.

Damian offers a message to younger Cardinal players.

“Don’t give up,” he said. “Even if you are tired, put 150% into everything.“

Damian is the son of Duranda Jones and has four siblings.

Kendal Mullins

Kendal Mullins #60

Freshman Kendal Mullins has played football for nine years in Martin County. He was a heavy hitter in middle school and is gearing up to do the same in high school this season.

Kendal will wear No. 60 on his back as junior varsity right guard.

Kendal says his favorite thing about Martin County is “everyone comes together when needed and our schools.”

He is the son of Ab and Tanya Mullins and has two siblings.

Kendal’s positive attitude sure is a great addition to the team.
