CAMPBELLSVILLE — Martin County wrestlers, led by Coach Josh Muncy, participated in the prestigious Campbellsville University FCA Wrestling Camp held June 9-11. The event saw attendance from wrestlers nationwide, eager to learn from world-class clinicians at the Powell Athletic Center.
Martin County’s team, which included Brock Messer, Weston Jude, Cole Jewell, Ryan Smith, Easton Slone, Parker Maynard, Peyton Massie, Jeremy Mollett, Brody Jewell and Brandon Wells, was part of the 300-strong middle and high school wrestlers present for the two-day, three-night camp.
The camp offered a transformative experience for the wrestlers, equipping them with enhanced skills, a deepened spiritual connection and a strengthened sense of camaraderie.
“It was a great camp – a jam-packed three days,” Coach Muncy said. “Our guys got some great instruction from world-class athletes.”
The camp incorporated a mix of basic instruction, technical training and competitive bouts. Equally important was the sharing of the message of Jesus Christ, making the event a unique combination of physical training and spiritual growth.
“Not only were the wrestlers able to acquire some knowledge to improve their wrestling, but they also were able to strengthen their relationship with Christ,” said Muncy. “They came home better men, both physically and spiritually.”
Campers started their day on the mats with chapel services, followed by technique sessions and dual meets, ending each day with additional chapel services and huddle time.
Prominent clinicians at the camp included Jim Gruenwald, a three-time National Christian College Athletic Association National Champion and a two-time member of the U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestling Team.
Nate Carr, one of the most accomplished wrestlers of his era, boasting three consecutive NCAA championships and a bronze medal from the 1988 Olympic Games, provided his services.
Mark Muñoz, a two-time state champion in California and a former National High School Champion, offered his expertise alongside David Carr, an NCAA Division I National Champion and a four-time Big 12 Conference Champion.
Coach Joe Carr Jr., a four-time Kentucky State Champion and a recipient of a full athletic scholarship to West Virginia University was also among the impressive list of clinicians.
