BOWLING GREEN — Martin County showed off its basketball prowess at the Western Kentucky University Basketball team camp, finishing with an impressive 6-1 record and securing a spot in the top 8 teams. The camp, held at E.A. Diddle Arena and led by WKU head coach Steve Lutz, took place from Thursday to Saturday, providing an excellent opportunity for teams to compete and hone their skills.

Martin County head coach Jason James expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance.

“It was a great experience for our kids,” James said.

The Cardinals exhibited their talent and determination throughout the camp, recording victories against Warren East 85-66, Madisonville North Hopkins 43-29, Trigg County 63-47, Silver Creek (Indiana) 63-59, Barren County 48-45 and White House (Tennessee) 54-38. Their only loss came at the hands of Fairdale, with a score of 56-49.

James reflected on the closely contested match against Fairdale. Despite falling short, Martin County was in the game until the end.

“The score was tied with five minutes to go,” said James. “We had a shot at beating them.”

Looking ahead, Coach James acknowledged Fairdale’s strength and potential for the upcoming season. With all of the starting lineup returning from last season, Fairdale is poised to continue its success and establish itself among the top teams in Kentucky.

“Fairdale should be in the top 20 in the state next season,” said James.

Martin County’s impressive 6-1 record and commendable performance against tough competition highlight the Cardinals’ talent and potential for the upcoming basketball season. As they continue to refine their skills and build on this experience, the Cardinals aim to make their mark in the state basketball scene.
