Junior Varsity goes 2-0 in Raceland League

CITIZEN STAFF REPORT

The Martin County Lady Cards junior varsity basketball team tallied a 2-0 record in the Raceland Summer League June 7, defeating Russell 32-28 and Rowan County 45-17.

Coaches Boo Newsome and Ali Scott have been working camps all summer and conducting open gyms for kids interested in playing basketball.

Summer League play is not mandatory but highly recommended.

Newsome is also working with the middle school program.

“These three weeks in June are very important to players and teams to play as much as possible to see where they are and all the things they need to improve on,” Newsome said. “Summer is a time for team bonding, improvement and having fun.”

Scott said the coaching staff would continue to work all summer to develop players.

“We will shut down for the KHSAA two-week dead period but start right back up with open gyms once the dead period is over,” Scott said. “The middle school and elementary basketball seasons are right around the corner. Players need to come out and work on their game to get ready for a great year of basketball.”
