CITIZEN STAFF REPORT
MARTIN COUNTY — To honor the rich history of Martin County, the Stories of Place program has launched an exciting community project. Now in its fifth year, the program aims to foster intergenerational connections by providing an opportunity for Martin Countians of all ages to share their stories. This summer, the program is calling for community involvement in a project to document family cemeteries in the county – no matter how small or big.
Martin County High School students will play a key role in this initiative. They will work alongside mentors from the Livelihoods Knowledge Exchange Network (www.likenknowledge.org) and the University of Kentucky to map, photograph and document gravesites throughout the county.
The project team is asking for community input about where cemeteries and gravesites are located.
Madison Mooney, a dedicated member of the project team, is leading the charge. Contact her at mmooney@likenknowledge.org or through the project’s online form at https://forms.gle/mrxWbL9GuwCfDhoq9.
The project’s ultimate goal is to develop a comprehensive map to share with residents, families engaged in genealogical work and anyone interested in Martin County’s rich history.
By documenting and preserving the locations of these family cemeteries, the project team hopes to provide a valuable resource that fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of the county’s past.
