GRAYSON — Martin County Middle School girls soccer defeated Rowan County Middle School 4-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference East semifinals Thursday at East Carter.

The win advances the Lady Cardinals to the conference championship final Monday against top-ranked Russell Middle School.

The Lady Cards, who won the OVC East District Tournament, received a first-round bye and advanced to the semifinals. Rowan County advanced to the semifinals with an 11-5 record after defeating Ashland Middle School 3-0 in the first round.

From the opening kickoff, the action was fast-paced and physical. Rowan County had momentum early, staying on offense for the first 10 minutes of the game.

Several shots on goal early finally led Rowan County to a 1-0 lead 8 minutes into the game.

Martin County looked to gain confidence and find their rhythm on offense. Great ball movement found Faith Caldwell going to the goal, beating two defenders for the score and tying the game 1-1.

Rowan County responded quickly, scoring a goal with 10 minutes left in the half to lead 2-1.

The Lady Cards continued to pressure the Rowan County defense, who seemed to wear down late in the half.

A quick counterattack found Caldwell in the open field beating her defender and tying the game 2-2 to end the half.

The Martin County defense stepped up big time in the second half. Defenders Jane Smith, Londyn Fraley, Chloe Moore, London Pinson and Anna Hinkle held Rowan County scoreless.

With the defense stepping up its game, the offense went to work.

Martin County had several near misses until Annaleigh Davis scored from distance to give the Lady Cards a 3-2 lead. The final 12 minutes of the half were fast-paced as both sides were not giving up.

Caldwell scored her third goal to seal the victory for the Lady Cards.
