Cardinals tennis falls to region favorite Lawrence County

Martin County tennis team lost May 10 to region favorite Lawrence County. The girls team fell 10-1 and the boys dropped a 9-2 decision to conclude regular-season play.

“I have seen a lot of growth and improvement in my team from the beginning of the season until now,” Martin County Coach Josh Penix said. “I am excited going into the region to see what draws we get and how we do in the postseason.”

The boys finished the regular season going 6-5-3 and the girls finished 5-10.

In girls singles action the No. 4 seed Caitlyn Horn pulled out her set for the win 6-1. No. 1 seed Kennedy Mills lost 6-0, No. 2 seed Dakota Ward dropped her set 6-3, and No. 3 seed Tamara Workman battled to the end in both her sets before losing 7-6 and 8-6. No. 5 seed Candace Spaulding dropped her set 6-1, No. 6 seed Sarah Keener fell 6-0, and No. 7 seed Grace Caldwell fell 6-2.

In girls doubles action the Lady Cards dropped all four sets. The No. 1 seed of Workman and Horn fell 8-0, No. 2 seed Tori Crum and Hailey Damron lost their set 6-1, No. 3 seed Katie Maynard and Aaliyah Cline fell 6-2, and Emilia Ek and Grace Caldwell lost 6-0.

Boys singles action saw No. 1 seed Caleb Horn fall 6-0, No. 2 seed Connor Dials dropped his set 8-4, No. 3 seed Levi Howell fell 6-0, No. 4 seed Bryon Marcum dropped his set 6-0, No. 5 seed Bryson Dials won his set 6-3, six-seed Cory Jarrell lost 6-0, and Jaxson Pack lost 6-1.

In boys doubles action the duo of Bryson Dials and Connor Dials won their set 6-0, the No. 1 seed of Cook and Marcum fell 8-0, two-seed Cory Jarrell and Levi Howell fell 6-2, and three-seed Liam May and Corey Endicott lost 6-0.

The 15th Region Tournament was scheduled to begin May 15 at Lawrence County.
