Martin County Middle School baseball finishes 1-2 week

Martin County Middle School baseball won one of three games last week. The Cardinals dropped games on the road April 17 to Betsy Layne 10-4 and April 18 to Lawrence County 13-1. They bounced back Thursday to defeat South Floyd 14-4 at home.

Below is a recap of all three games. 

MCMS falls to BL

ALLEN — Martin County Middle School went three up and three down in their first at-bat April 17 in a 10-4 loss to Betsy Layne in Allen.

Betsy Layne scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to go up 7-0.

The Cardinals got on the board in the second inning, scoring one run to cut the lead to 7-1. Trey McCoy singled and Tyler Stacy doubled to bring in McCoy for the run.

Betsy Layne scored a run in the fourth and another in the fifth inning to go up 9-1.

Betsy Layne’s defense held the Cardinals scoreless for three straight innings, but the Cardinals rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 10-4. Peyton McPeek, Knox Maynard and Caige Presley all singled and McCoy smashed a double. McPeek, Maynard and Presley all cross the plate to make the score 9-4.

The Bobcats struck again in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. 

LCMS knocks off MCMS

LOUISA — Lawrence County Middle School pushed Martin County baseball back 13-1 in a game April 18 in Louisa.

Jerrod Haney singled and Knox Maynard doubled to score Haney in Martin County’s first at-bat. This would be the only hits and runs for the Cardinals as they went three up and three down the next three innings.

Lawrence County scored four runs in the bottom of the second to go up 4-1, three in the third, and six in the fourth to end this one.

MCMS knocks off SF

INEZ — Martin County Middle School got an impressive 14-4 victory over Floyd Central in a game Thursday at Cardinal Field.

Floyd Central started the game with two runs on one walk and two hits to go up 2-0 in the first inning.

The Cardinals battled back and scored four runs on five walks and one hit by a pitch to go up 4-2.

Martin County allowed no hits and no runs in the top of the second inning.

When the dust settled in the bottom of the second, the Cardinals were in front 9-2. Jerrod Haney, Rex Ward and Trey McCoy singled, Knox Maynard drew a walk, and Bailey Fletcher tripled.

South Floyd scored two runs in the third inning to cut the lead to 9-4. 

The Cardinals struck again in the third inning to push two runs across the plate on a single by Haney and two bases on balls to go up 11-4.

South Floyd went three up and three down in the top of the fourth.

The Cardinals put three runs across the plate on four bases on balls and a fielder’s choice to nail this one shut.
