Martin County High School softball dropped a pair of games last week to district rival Magoffin County 16-11 at home April 19 and Tug Valley 9-0 on the road April 20.
Below is a recap of last week’s action.
Lady Cards drop district decision to Magoffin
INEZ — Martin County Lady Cardinals lost to district rival Magoffin County 16-11 in a game April 19 at home.
The Lady Cards got their bats going early in the first inning. Bella Muncy singled and Brynnalyn Smith doubled to score Muncy.
Magoffin County scored six runs in the third inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Martin County plated a run in the bottom of the fourth. Kaylee Endicott and Sophie Harless singled, then Bailey Dials doubled to bring Endicott home and cut the deficit to 6-2.
The Lady Cards came out swinging in the top of the fifth. Savannah Young, Muncy, Smith and Endicott singled and Hannah Robinson doubled. When the dust settled the Lady Cards had scored five runs to take a 7-6.
Magoffin County fired up the bats and scored eight runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead 14-7.
Young smacked a double to get the sixth inning started. Muncy, Endicott, Harless and Duncan singled, while Bailey Dials doubled to score four runs and cut the deficit to 14-11. Magoffin County gave up two walks in the inning.
Magoffin struck again in the seventh with two runs to end the slugfest on top.
Young toed the rubber for the Lady Cards, giving up 16 runs on 20 hits while striking out five and walking seven over seven innings.
Jaden Williams picked up the win for the Hornets, striking out nine batters.
The Lady Cards scored 11 runs on 15 hits and stole seven bases.
Kaylee Endicott went 3-for-4 at the plate, tallied two stolen bases, scored three runs and batted in one. Bella Muncy went 3-for-5, scored two runs, stole two bases and tallied one RBI. Haley Robinson went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a single, scored two runs and tallied two RBIs. Sophie Harless went 2-for-four and had one RBI. Savannah Young went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and a single and scored two runs. Brynnalyn Smith went 2-for-5 with a double and a single and scored one run. Addison Duncan went 1-for-2 at the plate with a single.
Tug Valley shuts out Martin County
NAUGATUCK, W.Va. — The Lady Cards went on the road to Tug Valley and returned with a 9-0 loss after five innings of play Thursday.
Kinna Justice toed the rubber for the Panthers.
Savannah Young started in the circle for the Lady Cards, giving up nine runs on eight hits in five innings.
Tug Valley scored two runs in the first inning and one in the second for a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers added another run in the fourth and rallied to score four runs in the fifth for the shutout.
Valley tallied eight hits in the game. Amelya Wellman went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. Bailee Hall tripled and scored one run. Tailyn Russell doubled, stole a base, scored two runs and batted in two. Megan Griffey doubled, scored one run and batted in one.
The Lady Cards had three hits and no runs. Haley Robinson, Hannah Stacy and Brynnalyn Smith recorded singles.
