KERMIT, W.Va. — Kermit Volunteer Fire Department will host a demolition derby Saturday, May 6 at the old baseball field on Marrowbone Creek.

The event is a fundraiser for the fire department.

The entry fee per car is $50 and the ticket cost for those attending is $10, according to Davie Baker, who is helping organize the event.

“We expect a big crowd and a bunch of cars to enter,” Baker said. “There has been a lot of interest. We expect a good show.”

There are two main categories: mini street stock cars and larger street stock cars.

The payout for the winner in each class is $1,000. The second-place finisher will get $250 while the third-place will receive a $100 prize. Winners will receive trophies in each class.

The derby will also feature a youth division. Prize money for youth winners depends on the number of entries. The payout will be 75% of the youth entry fees.

If there is enough interest, there will be a “powderpuff” division at the end of the evening.

Baker said there would be certified demolition derby track officials at the event.

Gates will open early at 9 a.m. The first derby will start at 4:30 p.m. rain or shine.

There will be a concession stand available and also a T-shirt vendor.

Drivers must wear helmets, gloves, eye protection and long-sleeved shirts.
