INEZ — Arbor Day is the one day set aside each year to celebrate trees. This year it occurs April 28. However, the Martin County Cooperative Extension Office and Martin County Soil Conservation will start the celebration Friday (April 14) with a tree giveaway from 9 a.m.-noon at the extension office on Holy Street.
The extension office is expecting 400 tree seedlings from the Arbor Day Foundation.
According to agents in the extension office, if the trees do not arrive by Friday, residents will receive vouchers and be able to pick them up when they arrive.
Residents should look for the tree giveaway table, which will be in front of the extension office.
This year the Martin County Fiscal is joining the tree giveaway effort.
Judge/Executive Lon Lafferty has proclaimed Friday as “Arbor Day” in Martin County.
“Trees are necessary for life,” Lafferty said. “They take in the CO2 that we hear so much about these days and give off oxygen … I encourage you all to get a tree or two and plant them.”
This year’s tree seedling giveaway will include white dogwood, gray dogwood, crape myrtle and river birch.
