After weeks of training and games being rescheduled, the Martin County Middle School girls soccer team officially kicked off their season at home with a 6-1 victory over district rival Adams Middle School from Floyd County.

The Lady Cards were ready to play and attacked the goal early to keep Adams on the defensive end.

Adams defense held strong but Faith Caldwell finally found the back of the net at the 10-minute mark. Caldwell quickly followed with her second goal to put the Lady Cards up early 2-0.

Martin County was called for a handball in the box which Adams capitalized on to keep it close 2-1 at the half.

The second half saw the Lady Cards move the ball better leading to more shots on goal. The Adams keeper stopped Caldwell’s free kick, but forward Jazlynn Jude was there to score goal No. 3 for the Lady Cards.

When the final whistle blew, the Lady Cards came away with an impressive win.

Caldwell ended with four goals and Jude scored two of her own. Five Lady Cards had one assist each: Caldwell, Jude, Jane Smith, Annaleigh Davis and Lexi Cline.

“These girls have been training for the last 6-7 weeks, and man, were they ready to play,” Martin County coach Steven Gauze said. “Of course I always see room for improvement but it was a really good win for us, and I’m happy for the girls.”

The Lady Cards have a busy schedule with three home games scheduled for this week. Monday (March 27), the Lady Cards were set to take on Ashland Middle School and Tuesday (March 28) district rival Johnson Central Middle School. They have another big district game Thursday against Lawrence County Middle School.
